Easter Week of Ciudad Real

The Easter Week de Ciudad Real is the historical legacy of the different cultures that have crossed the city, a traditional transit zone since the Middle Ages. As a religious experience it conserves the austerity, recollection and penitential values of its origins. It was declared a Festivity of Regional Interest for Tourists on 3 December 1985.

The Easter Week of Ciudad Real, from an artistic and cultural standpoint, is a most interesting event that has kept the best of each of the centuries over which its long history has spanned. Thus we find, among its 34 stages of the Cross, figures from the 15th and 18th centuries, with works by famous sculptors such as Castillo Lastrucci, Illanes, Claudio Riuis and many others.

The processions begin on Palm Sunday, but the most important ones are those taking place on Good Friday, with many 'saetas’ being sung during the procession, and in the early morning hours of Holy Thursday. In this procession many penitents come out, some of them in chains, to accompany the Cristo de la Buena Muerte and the Virgen del Mayor Dolor, illuminated by the torches they carry in their hands in a silent procession where one can only hear the prayers of the Via Crucis.

Perhaps one of the surprising aspects of this festivity is the high degree of involvement of over fifteen thousand people, from variety of groups, especially youths and women.
