This is an authentic medieval fortress, the foundation of which is attributed to King Alfonso VIII, according to the Chronicle of the Wise King, in the 17th century. Later, during the Renaissance, is was renovated, particularly by the Infante don Juan Manuel and the Marquis de Villena.

The Castle has a square floor plan, surrounded by a double defensive enclosure. It is worth noting the Renaissance Keep, with pointed crenellations.

In general it is an irregular shaped fortress, covering a wide area, united by the stone itself to the rest of the city’s walls and fortifications, which together made up the basis of all Alarcón’s system of defences.
