It was built in the third quarter of the 15th century by Don Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, on the site of the Arabic “Xerif El-Edrisi” castle.
The castle had great steep walls and six corners with towers cut into them, and was surrounded by a 16-meter deep moat.
In the 19th century a number of renovations took place, and the Keep was lost. This tower once had two rooms on top, in the highest of which, according to the same document, César Borgia was held prisoner for the death of the Duke of Gandía.
It is worth noting that as well as the castle some ruined walls remain from the Muslim and other later periods, such as the Diablos and Tiradores Gates, this latter being the only one that survives intact.
- Timetables
- It is only possible to visit the exterior of the castle. The interior is undergoing restoration.
