It is a monumental heritage site built on the orders of doña María Diega Desmaissières y Sevillano, Duchess of Sevillano and Countess de la Vega del Pozo, at the end of the 19th century, more than one hundred years ago, to serve as Refuge for the city poor and to be the last resting place for them and all their family.
The latter was built in what is known as the Pantheon, a singular and surprising building, a place whose beauty, splendour, and marvellous forms and colours inside can scarcely be fathomed until one visits this location.
