The Castillo de Montalbán, according to the description in the Corpus de castillos medievales de Castilla (Castile Medieval Castle Corpus Document), is a Christian work from the 12th century, carried out by the Knights Templars, who must have received the concession from Alfonso VII at the same time as he gave them the great square in Calatrava, although many writers consider that it was built upon another fortress of Moorish origin.
It is a large fortress surrounded to the east and north by the River Torcón that passes by at a great depth, which made it unnecessary to build defences in this part. There are defences on the southern face and part of the east, comprising a long barbican.
The area is covered by four towers, of which those at the ends are rectangular, whilst the other two are flanking towers, pentagonal in shape and jutting far out.
The entrance is covered by a special barbican.
Hardly anything remains inside, merely some dungeons and some rooms in one of the towers.
