The church dates from the 12th century, although it was rebuilt completely at the beginning of the 14th century by the order of the Señor de Orgaz, the High Chancellor of Castile, and of which only its Mudejar tower remains. A smaller copy of the church of San Román, its model is repeated with few variations in those of Santa Leocadia, San Miguel Alto, a beautiful 15th century work, and in San Pedro Martir, all of them in Toledo.

Its splendid tower is one of the best examples of Toledan Mudejar art. It is square in shape and made of edged masonry and brick. The upper part is divided into three sections with horseshoe arches within lobuled ones, a blind arcade of lobuled arches separated by columns of glazed clay, and in the upper part bell windows. Also outstanding are its glazed ceramics, the incrustations of a Visigoth niche and a Celtic cross.

The interior of the church has three naves, with a polygonal apse with three faces, with a notable Plateresque chapel (entered through the west door) that houses the painting El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz, by El Greco, an oil on canvas measuring 4.80 by 3.60 m.

We can also contemplate other works such as a 16th century Plateresque altarpiece and two Baroque ones, a 16th century. marble font, a beautiful image of the Virgin in marble dating from the 12th century, three interesting canvases by Luis Tristán and two sculptures from the school of Alonso Cano.
