Yeste Castle

Yeste Castle is a monumental castle of Andaluz origin on the borders of the Kingdom of Granada, from whence the bellicose Moors of Huescar and Baza carried out infinite border raids on with the rustic Christians. At the meeting point of the Alcaraz, Segura and la Sagra mountain ranges and birthplace of the Segura, Tus, Taibilla and Zumeta rivers.

How to get there
Road transport

Yeste Castle was initially a rectangular fortress with 13th century towers to which a fortified enclosure where the town was to be found.

The whole area was intensely populated by Iberians, Romans, and later Arabs, who made Yeste a great fortress. Following the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the lands of Yeste were given to the Order of Santiago, to protect this border zone, as it was linked to the Arabic kingdoms of Valencia and Andalusia.

It currently boasts a keep, a parade ground and a palatial area with a beautiful gothic window. It is in a good state of repair, having been restored and rehabilitated.

Mediaeval Interpretation Centre “Living the Frontier” is to be found in the Parade Ground, with an attractive tour of medieval history in three galleries: Encomienda Gallery, Mixed Gallery: Muslim and Christian, and Armoury. In the old prison cells there is an Ethnology Museum.
