An entertaining voyage: The National Theatre Museum collection creates an historical voyage that begins with Greco-Roman theatre and passes through medieval theatre, with a particular focus on the Misterio de Elche and La Celestina, before going on to the theatre of the Golden Age, open air comedies, the onstage activities of the 18th century, Romanticism and Don Juan Tenorio as examples of the dramatic activity of the 19th century, the vanguards of the 20th century and the teatro de Arte, opera, zarzuela, dance and frivolous theatre, ending with the creation of the National Theatres and today’s Festivals of Spain and Drama.

The collections constitute valuable material for understanding the dramatic arts and the artists and creators who have peopled the Spanish stage. Important exhibits include more than 10,000 paper works: set designs, figurines, drawings and prints. The richness of the collection is completed by collections of paintings, sculpture and photography (more than 30,000 snapshots since 1870), costumes (more than 2,000 since the end of the 18th century), models, theatre shorts, musical archive, administrative documents and seasonal programmes from different Spanish theatres.

The Museum covers 2,213.68 square meters, on three floors, with exhibition rooms on each floor, a library, storage in the basement and on the split level, offices on the top floor and in the tower and, finally, Moorish cloister for temporary exhibitions, theatre productions and educational workshops.

The Museum also uses the Church of San Agustín as an exhibition space and the old Silo as a storeroom.

Because of the richness of its content and for being the only Museum exclusively dedicated to the history of dramatic activity in our country, the aim of the National Theatre Museum is the acquisition, preservation, cataloguing, exhibition and spreading of the cultural legacy that Spain has given to dramatic creation in all its forms since the very beginning.
