Quixote Museum and Cervantine Library

The Quixote Museum in Ciudad Real, dedicated to the immortal figure of the knight Don Quixote, combines an exhibition of works of art related to Cervantes’s novel with modern multimedia displays that take us back to the 16th century, with the atmosphere of a printing press of the time, and characters from the novel, in a real voyage through time.

In the Exhibition Room on the first floor a dialogue between ten characters from Quixote is simulated through the play of lights and shadows. Of particular note are the Master painter Palmero’s depiction of the Burial of Don Quixote. Ten paintings also make up the exhibition in the Anteroom, the work of José Jiménez Aranda, one of the 19th century’s best Quixote illustrators.

In Projection Room 1, there is The first impression, a montage that transports the public into the atmosphere of a Madrid printing house at the beginning of the 17th century; while in Projections Room 2, A journey through Quixote, combines the projection of images of elements of the setting with readings that aim to entertain and delight the general public as they pass through some of the scenes from the story.

All of this is accompanied by readings from Don Quixote with Cervantes’ unsurpassable, carefree and sometimes comical prose.

Students of the work of Cervantes also have a Study Centre at their disposal and a very good Library with a collection of 3500 items, all related to the Cervantine theme. There is a reading room, set up for twenty researchers and a room for digitising and cataloguing documents.
