San Gil Museum of Sacred Art
The San Gil Museum in the medieval village of Atienza merits a visit as much for the building itself as for the works in the exhibition. It is a Romanesque Church with three naves, a magnificent coffered ceiling in the central nave and a semicircular apse. This museum is noted for its paintings, sculptures, precious metalwork, archaeology, minerals, fossils and heraldry.

The San Gil Museum boasts three magnificent collections: Religious Art, Archaeology and Mineralogy.
The Archaeological Collection, located in the Baptistery, contains pieces from the Palaeolithic to the Visigoth periods, including some important Bronze Age finds.
The Mineralogy and Fossil Collection is to be found in the Choir. In it you can see hundreds of examples of fossils from the area around Atienza and from different areas in the province of Guadalajara, as well as exhibits from other parts of the world.
The rest of the Church is taken up with works of Religious Art. The collection of paintings, made up of around 30 works, includes four outstanding panels attributed to Alonso Berruguete and the Virgen de Belén by Juan de Juanes. Among the sculptures are works of great value, such as the gothic-style Christ Crucified, Luis Salvador Carmona’s "Virgen del Rosario" or the 17th century font.
