This rock was the location chosen by various human groups to settle from the Bronze Age onwards up until the 10th century A.D.
In the mountain, there is an area within the town called “El Reguerón”, where walls, doors and defensive systems were built.
To date, the earliest settlement discovered belongs to the Bronze Age and it is a burial site, a common grave for the dead, a cemetery of those times. In the times of the Iberian civilisation, this place is still considered a holy site for tumulus and funerary monuments; as well as a wall structure built with masonry.
In Roman times, the town, Ptolomey’s Ilunum, reinforces its walls.
Subsequently in post-Roman times, the town’s defencesare strengthened with a door, a bastion and a tower, arranged in an L-shape, in addition to a spectacular complex of public spaces and rooms of great scientific interest.
