The Bodega Viñedos Cigarral de Santa María, a country house in Toledo, was founded in 1997 by a famous restaurant owner called Adolfo Muñoz who is also president of the Adolfo-Toledo restaurant group. The estate covers an area of seven hectares around the main building where the small bodega or winery and the family home are to be found. Of this area just four are set aside for wine-growing. It is the only urban vineyard in Spain and one of four which exist in the whole world, each to be found in places as magical as Toledo: Malibu, Vienna and Paris.

How to get there: Road transport

The estate contains three separate areas. In the first one the Syrah grape predominates and Merlot is grown on each side; in the second and third areas Cencibel and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown.

Right from the start the family committed itself to producing special wine which bore the great personality of the soil and underwent meticulous fermentation. This work has produced tremendous results which are marketed under the name of Pago del Ama with well-structured and complex wines which have been awarded, among other things, 94 points by Robert Parker for the 2001 blend.

The bodega and the vineyard, which has been planted in an age-old olive grove from where it is said that Charles the Fifth of the Holy Roman Empire (Carlos I of Spain) looked upon his whole empire, may be visited every day of the week if you book in advance. The bodega’s facilities also provide an excellent setting for private and business events.
