Hayedo de Tejera Negra Nature Reserve

The Park comprises the rivers Lillas and Zarzas, born in the Buitrera glacier valley, as well as a representative and exceptional beech-tree forest, one of the southernmost forests in Europe.
The Park’s microclimate, together with its isolation, have allowed the preservation of its singular plants.

Location

It is located in the north-western corner of the province of Guadalajara, and it is part of the Ayllón Mountain, on the eastern side of the Central Mountain System.

Climate
As far as the climate is concerned, summers are mild and cool and winters are very harsh, with snow for two to three months. Temperatures vary between -14º C and 23º C.

The Park includes the high area of two valleys with a typical fluvial profile, the Valley of Lillas and the Valley of Zarzas, which are parallel, with a single northeast-southeast orientation. They are bordered by high, rugged rocky peaks.

- The Lillas Valley is wider and larger than the Zarzas valley, and it has deep gullies on both of its sides.

- The Zarzas Valley is deeper and there is an asymmetry between its sides and while the left side is homogeneous and has no ruptures, the right side, dominated by rocky elevations and scarps, is spotted with numerous sloped gullies such as the Tejera Negra and la Laguna gullies.

Information on visits
From Cantalojas (10km south of the 114 county road joining Ayllón and Atienza), or by accessing Guadalajara over Veguillas. The road heading to Riofrío de Riaza goes through the central section of the Park.
Legislation
It was declared a Nature Reserve by Royal Decree of November 10, 1978. The park was extended thanks to the Decree of January 21, 1987. It is part of the 2000 Nature Network, as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area.
