Locations in Castilla-La Mancha
Castilla-La Mancha experiences transformation throughout the length of its five provinces: Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo. It offers the visitor not only its two World Heritage Cities, Toledo and Cuenca, or countless cities and small villages, but also 320,000 hectares of protected nature sites.
Provinces
-
Albacete
The province of Albacete offers the visitor fascinating and beautiful towns, nature spots and monuments. Being the southern plateau’s outlet toward the Mediterranean Sea, which it connects with the Spanish Levant, its terrain is extraordinarily diverse. In the province of Albacete we can enjoy everything from the landscapes typical of the plains of La Mancha to the Sierra de Alcaraz (Alcaraz Mountain Range) and the Sierra del Segura (River Segura Mountain Range), both part of the Baetic Mountain Ranges and classified as medium-size mountains, creating an abrupt contrast between the steep mountains and the flat or gently rolling terrain in the middle and northern areas of the province.
-
Ciudad Real
The province of Ciudad Real offers the traveller 101 towns, surrounded by the landscape of the southern half of the Central Plateau with its flat terrain with small hills. Ciudad Real may surprise you with its history as a land of knights and military orders, of the adventures of Don Quixote and of windmills, its nature spots and protected ecosystems as important as the Cabañeros and Tablas de Daimiel Nature Reserves along with other reserves such as the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de Ruidera (Ruidera’s Lagoons Nature Reserve) and the Campo de Calatrava, one of the three most important zones with recent volcanic activity in Spain, or Alcudia Valley and the Madrona Mountain Range.
-
Cuenca
The province of Cuenca is surprising for its diverse landscapes: its plains of La Mancha contrast with its mountain ranges, both of which are, without a doubt, of great beauty. From its capital city, a World Heritage Site, full of contrasts and located in the middle of the province, each one of its natural regions can be visited: La Alcarria Conquense (The Cuencan part of La Alcarria), La Mancha, La Manchuela and la Serranía (the Mountains). These areas, with their natural diversity, offer the visitor a range of opportunities to discover the same region.
-
Guadalajara
Its spectacular landscapes, peppered with medieval castles, are among the biggest attractions of the province. Travel to la Alcarria following Cela’s footsteps or discover the unique architecture that characterises the famous Pueblos de la Arquitectura Negra (Black Architecture Towns). Its contact with nature, its country house lodges with tremendous character and wonderful service, the carefully perfected local cuisine and its charming small towns are what make Guadalajara a province that simply must be on any traveller’s itinerary.
-
Toledo
Throughout the province of Toledo its landscapes are diverse. Its plains in La Mancha of Toledo contrast with the geography of the Mountains of Toledo and the Tiétar Valley. Its capital, the Imperial City of Toledo, is a World Heritage Site. The cuisine is comprised of dishes made with locally grown fruits and vegetables and game meat and is a delicious accompaniment to any stay while a visit to historical monumental sites makes for a lovely dessert.
