This municipality is well-known thanks to Miguel de Cervantes' literary work “Don Quixote”. Chapters 22 and 23 of “Don Quixote” take place in “Montesinos' Cave”. As a curiosity the book tells the story of a lady named Ruidera who, along with her daughters and nieces, succumbed to the charms of the Wizard Merlin and were thus transformed into lagoons while the squire Guadiana was turned into a river.
Ossa de Montiel is also renowned for hosting one of the most important Nature Reserves in Castilla-La Mancha: Ruidera's Lagoons Nature Reserve, among the most beautiful spots in the region with a lovely landscape, privileged location and a series of 15 interconnected lagoons across 25km of terrain.
