Province of Albacete
The province of Albacete offers the visitor fascinating and beautiful towns, nature spots and monuments. Being the southern plateau’s outlet toward the Mediterranean Sea, which it connects with the Spanish Levant, its terrain is extraordinarily diverse. In the province of Albacete we can enjoy everything from the landscapes typical of the plains of La Mancha to the Sierra de Alcaraz (Alcaraz Mountain Range) and the Sierra del Segura (River Segura Mountain Range), both part of the Baetic Mountain Ranges and classified as medium-size mountains, creating an abrupt contrast between the steep mountains and the flat or gently rolling terrain in the middle and northern areas of the province.
The province of Albacete includes a great number of gorgeous nature spots and landscapes such as the Parque Natural de las Lagunas de Ruidera (Ruidera’s Lagoons Nature Reserve), consisting of a series of fifteen lagoons across twenty-five kilometres, or the Calar del Río Mundo y la Sima Nature Reserve, one of the most frequently visited due to its extraordinary beauty.
The landscapes that the River Júcar forms as it winds its way through the province of Albacete are simply stunning with their deep rocky canyons intruding upon the vast plain. The River Cabriel’s clear waters mark the border with the province of Valencia. The province of Albacete houses a number of reservoirs, such as the Camarillas, Talave, Fuensanta, Cenajo and El Molinar Reservoirs, where visitors can go fishing and enjoy a variety of outdoor sports.
Albacete’s towns are no less beautiful. Particularly noteworthy are: Alcalá del Júcar, Almansa, Alcaraz, Chinchilla de Montearagón, Letur, Villarrobledo and Hellín, considered Historical-Artistic Sites.
Albacete’s traditional cuisine is uncomplicated and as diverse as its geography. Along with the traditional cuisine, the visitor can also enjoy high-quality signature cuisine.
The province offers a large variety of festivities, the biggest of which being the famous Feria de Albacete (Albacete Fair). Of particular interest are the Tamborada de Hellín and the Tamborada de Tobarra (Hellín and Tobarra Drum Festivals), considered to be of National Tourist Interest and the running of the bulls held mainly in the mountain towns. There is a grand bull tradition in the whole of the province and many bull-fights are also held. The Carnivals, especially those of Tarazona de La Mancha and Villarrobledo, the Cristo del Sahúco and Virgen de Cortes romerías (processions) and the Moors and Christians Festivals in Almansa and Caudete are also of great interest.
In Albacete, if we speak of craftwork, we must inevitably speak of the crafting of knives and knife-related objects, a tradition that goes back to the Islamic presence in the area. This rich history can be discovered in the Museo de la Cuchillería (Knife Museum).
Albacete is today one of the most developed provinces in the region thanks to its capital city, the most populated of Castilla-La Mancha.
