Alcázar de San Juan
A village in the province of Ciudad Real situated in the centre of Spain, in the heart of La Mancha.
Since in 1748 the baptism certificate of a “Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra” was discovered in its Santa María la Mayor’s Church, it has contested with Alcalá de Henares the honour of being the Don Miguel de Cervantes’s birthplace. Cervantes’s knowledge of La Mancha’s environment and personalities would seem to support its claim.
The arrival of the railroad in 1854 profoundly changed the economic structure of the town, turning it into the area’s economic engine.
