Manzanares Castle was built by the Order of Calatrava as a strategic location in the defence of the Cañadas Reales (Royal Paths) of Cuenca and Soria, the best means of communication of their time.
The castle was known as Pilas Bonas and Manzanares and the village took its name from the castle. The Manzanares area was one of the most important of the Order of Calatrava’s land trusts. Today, the castle is a cosy hotel where the visitor can relax and enjoy the delicious cuisine of La Mancha.
In Manzanares we can also find accommodation in the Parador de Turismo (luxury state-run hotel), a country house with La Mancha character surrounded by trees and gardens and an enticing spot in La Mancha’s landscape.
The Feria Regional del Campo y Muestras (Regional Farming and Trade Fair) has been held in Manzanares since 1969. In this fair the wine and cheese contests are of particular note.
