During the >Late Middle Ages, Miguelturra lay at the centre of the continuous struggle between the Crown of Castile and the Order of Calatrava. The Order was wary of nearby Ciudad Real which was then under the exclusive leadership of the king and just a short distance from Miguelturra which was part of the Order’s feudal dominions. As a result, skirmishes between the knights of the Order and the town authorities were not rare.

The people of Calatravo also tried to favour Miguelturra commercially with the aim of damaging the economy of its nearby rival. Skirmishes reached a crucial height during the crisis of the 14th century when the people of Ciudad Real entered Miguelturra and set fire to it on up to seven occasions. It is from these successive fires that the town gets its name, as it gained the nickname Miguel Turrado (meaning Miguel Quemado or “Burned Miguel”), which then became Miguelturra.
