San Carlos del Valle
San Carlos del Valle is in the southeast of the province of Ciudad Real, in Campo de Montiel (Montiel Field). It is also called “the Christ's” town, as it is known in the local area, alluding to the majesty of its Church and Plaza.

In this town the Plaza Mayor focuses our attention, being of great architectural and popular interest and comparable in beauty only to those found in Almagro and Villanueva de Los Infantes. It is nearly rectangular in form, 53 metres long and 21 metres wide, and is made up of Tuscan columns holding up floors and galleries with lintels, concrete footings and wooden balusters. At one side the Plaza, forming the backdrop, sits the Town Council building. Its façade features a continuous projected balcony over wooden cantilevers. At the other side a private home with a typical patio with columns, with arches and a covered balcony. The Plaza Mayor was originally built as the atrium of the magnificent Christ's Church, erected over Santa Elena's sanctuary where, according to traditional legend, Christ miraculously appeared and left a strange traveller in a haystack. The Church has been refurbished and is well-preserved and among the province's late Baroque churches. It is considered Cultural Property with Monument status as of 1993.
