A Roman settlement has been found in Villanueva de la Fuente where there are remains of a Roman road and Roman dwelling which can be visited.
It would appear that the settlement was Mentesa Oretana, an important Roman town which even came to mint its own money.
The town lay on the path of the “Herculean Road” which went from Cadiz to Rome, passing through Mentesa Oretana.
