The village was founded in the Lower Middle Ages, when soldiers from the northern Spanish region of La Rioja established their residence in the Escabas Valley. This is why the patron saint is San Millán (from La Rioja) and the village has a brotherhood with the village of San Millán de la Cogolla in La Rioja, northern Spain.
The River Escabas runs through the village, creating two large ravines along its course. The first of the ravines is located in the proximities of Fuertescusa and another subsequent ravine is found near Priego, with Cañamares being in a valley.
