Cañete

A spectacular Historical Artistic Site in the province of Cuenca, Cañete was a fief belonging to the Hurtado de Mendoza family, the Marquises of Cañete, and the homeland of Álvaro de Luna. The strategic location of the villa assured that it would play an important role in successive historical conflicts, owing to the location of its 10th century castle. Its layout is most interesting for its medieval radial pattern centred on the Plaza Mayor, with irregular streets, alleys and wall walkways.

Among the places to visit in the Serranía de Cuenca (Cuenca Mountain Ranges), the village of Cañete is recognised as one of the most alluring to tourists due to a combination of factors: its historical and cultural heritage, magnificent natural surroundings and its tourist infrastructure in a region where facilities for visitors are hard to come by. Not only that, but its location, almost right in the middle of the Cuenca Mountain Ranges, makes it an important strategic point in the planning of tourist routes and visits.

Special trips in Cañete
A visit to this town will surprise a traveller, not only because of its grand fortress , but also because of the effect created by the village walls that descend from afar to embrace the village. These large walls with sawtooth-shaped architectural elements are up to five metres high. Their access gates, all very well-preserved, are: Las Eras Gate, with a horseshoe arch that reveals its Arabic origins, San Bartolomé's Gate, of Islamic tradition with a horseshoe arch and bent entrance and La Virgen's Gate. This splendid medieval site is complemented by an impressive Plaza Mayor with a portico and a variety of examples of religious heritage, such as Santiago's Church or San Julian's Church and La Virgen de la Zarza's Shrine.
