Iberians had already been living in the vicinity, on the Cabeza Moya hill for instance, where vessels, pottery, and Iberian coins have been found. There are also Roman sites such the Roman necropolis at El Pozuelo and the Roman road from Iniesta to Cesar Augusta (now Zaragoza), and the pilasters of a Roman bridge over the River Cabriel. Its excellent location made it a border point in the times of the Reconquest of Spain, and the town was taken by Christian troops after the fall of Alarcón. It also belonged to the estate of Alarcón, the marquisate of Villena and then in 1480 it came into the possession of the marquisate of Moya, later becoming an independent town.
There are steep streets with handrails, some of which have steps. The architecture is erratic and anarchic with façades with whimsical wooden framework. Some of the ancestral homes still bear a coat of arms. It is a lovely mountain village with castle remains and other old features as well as an interesting collection of buildings. Its natural heritage is rich and varied with a special protection area for birds and other areas which have been proposed as Sites of Community Interest.
