Talavera de la Reina is a town central Spain, and it is the capital of a large county belonging to the autonomous region of Castilla-La Mancha although it comprises some villages in the couth of Ávila and the north of Extremadura (known as the old lands of Talavera). It is located in the northeast of the province of Toledo. It is the second-largest city in Castilla-La Mancha by number of inhabitants and the first in the province, with a population in excess of 83,793 inhabitants (according to Spanish National Statistics Office information released in 2006). It borders to the north with the villages of Mejorada, Segurilla and Pepino, to the northeast with the town of Las Herencias, to the southwest with the towns of Calera and Chozas and to the northwest with the town of Velada. Its geographical location is on a river terrace of the River Tajo in a widening of the river due to the outlet of several effluents such as the Alberche, the Papacochinos, or the Portiña stream. The river forms an estuary with two main islands: Chamelo and Isla Grande. The first of the islands is protected as a nature reserve due to the wealth of its fauna and plant life. The cities perimeters are confined by the Cerro Negro (Black Hill), to the south, and the Segurilla hills, to the north. The River Tajo divides the city in two. The north is the most densely-populated area and it is linked to the areas in the south by three bridges, one of which is of Roman origin (in spite of the fact that the remains preserved are of Arab origin). The continental climate is mitigated thanks to the influence of the river. Winters are usually cold and very humid with frequent fog patches, while summers are very warm. The valley of Talavera is very fertile and vegetation comprises Mediterranean forest lands to the north with Phoenician junipers, holm olks, cork oaks and river forests. Cerro Negro has a large number of conifers as the area has been reforested.
